£250K funding for a new Domestic Abuse and Mental Health Support Service in Neath Port Talbot

We are one of 10 projects across Wales sharing in £2,666,319 as part of the latest round of the Big Lottery Fund’s People and Places programme.

We have received a £249,838 grant to fund a new project called LIFE (Liberty, Independence, Freedom, and Empowerment)

The project, in partnership with local mental health charity, Mind Neath Port Talbot, will develop a self-help programme to support victims of domestic abuse following crisis.

An on-going self-designed activity programme will bring together members of the survivors’ network to offer mutual support and a variety of activities.

The project will improve mental health, resilience, self-confidence, skills and independence in order to break the cycle of domestic abuse.

The grant, over two and a half years, will fund a project manager, engagement officer and a mental health resilience worker; project delivery costs, equipment and overheads.

Lucy Reynolds, Director of Port Talbot and Afan Women’s Aid, said:

“Being able to provide a form of on-going support to victims of Domestic Abuse, when formal support has come to an end, is absolutely invaluable. We know that when support ends, women are left to cope on their own, often at a time when they are particularly isolated and vulnerable, which makes them more susceptible to returning to unhealthy relationships.

Giving these women the opportunity to access a survivor’s network and to form friendships is like offering a lifeline, empowering them to rebuild their lives and independence.”

Highlighting the importance of the People and Places programme, Rona Aldrich, Wales Committee Member for the Big Lottery Fund, said:

“Programmes like People and Places are making a difference to the lives of so many people in communities across Wales.

It delivers on our promise to use National Lottery funding to regenerate and revitalise communities, tackle disadvantage head on and leave a lasting legacy.”

The LIFE project will begin on April 1st 2018.
