International Women’s Day 2017

International Women’s Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.

A gender pay gap persists across the globe and women are still not present in equal numbers in business or politics. Figures show that globally, women’s education, health and violence is still worse than that of men.

Port Talbot and Afan Women’s Aid marked International Women’s Day 2017 by raising awareness of Domestic Abuse and gender inequality on Social Media and at local events in the community.

We ran social media campaigns to recruit volunteers and reach out to those affected by Domestic Abuse.

In partnership with Neath Council Communities First, our Making Futures and Material Girls staff and volunteers held an information stall at an ‘Inspiration Nation’ event at the Princess Royal Theatre in Port Talbot. One survivor spoke about overcoming Domestic Abuse and becoming a successful entrepreneur.

Our Social Enterprise also held an up-cycling workshop and raised awareness of our services at Women 4 resources ‘Celebrating International Women’s Day’ Event in Swansea.

Lastly, our Positive Relationships and Material Girls team attended the Violence Against Women, Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence Strategy Consultation Launch. Our Positive Relationship’s Officer delivered a presentation promoting our Caring Dad’s project.

If you, or someone you care about, is experiencing Domestic Abuse, we’re here to help you on International Women’s Day and every other day of the year:
