The Freedom Programme is a Domestic Abuse programme which was created by Pat Craven who evolved it from her knowledge gained by working with perpetrators of domestic violence. The Programme was primarily designed for women as victims of domestic violence, since research shows that in the vast majority of cases of serious abuse are male on female.

The Freedom Programme examines the roles played by attitudes and beliefs around the actions of abusive men and the responses of victims and survivors. The aim is to help them to make sense of and understand what has happened to them, instead of the whole experience just feeling like a horrible mess. The Freedom Programme also describes in detail how children are affected by being exposed to this kind of abuse and very importantly how their lives are improved when the abuse is removed.

This year to date, we have delivered 3 Freedom Programmes to service users and plan to deliver the next programme in September. Participants so far have reported an increase in confidence, self-esteem and empowerment due to a better understanding of domestic abuse. We have many positive comments reported by our service users including ‘Amazing’, ‘hopeful for the first time’, ‘Angry that they let themselves and children suffer’, ‘Eye opening’, ‘relived’ and ‘Positive’.

Our first Freedom Programme group wrote a letter passing on their wisdom to the next group to share their successes, fears and trepidations:

“Dear the Freedom Programme Group,

We are the ladies who attended the last programme, we would like to tell you a little about how it has changed the outlook we have on our lives. Before attending the Freedom Programme we were wary and scared about reliving the Abuse and sharing our experience with others. Little did we know we would all be a great support to one another!

The programme is hard; there will be times were you will want to give up. But please don’t. These are emotions we need to go through to come out the other side. Throughout the Freedom Programme there will be different sessions that affect you all differently. There will be videos that completely open your eyes and workshops that will mark moments of realisation.

But remember that in 8 weeks’ time you will have the knowledge and tools to help you with your family, children and even future partners. We now are all feeling stronger, supported, empowered and confident that we have the tools to not become a victim of Domestic Abuse again.

You will feel like this too… along with a great group of friends that you have made along the way.

Don’t Give up!

Freedom programme March 2017”.

We would like to thank each and every participant who has attended the Freedom Programme. If you wish to know more or attend a programme please make contact with our office on 01639 894864.
